Cut Above the Rest

Posted by tvor @ 2:40 pm

Yesterday was a productive day…well atleast from 1:00 - 3:00. I headed down to the Bridlewood Mall, about a 15 minute walk from the apartment, to get my hair cut. The last time I got a haircut in the mall, I went to The Ultimate Cut and was very disappointed. The woman barely cut my hair. I keep saying “Nope, shorter….shorter than that. Can you cut it over again, but shorter?” After much pleading I just gave up and left with my hair being a few millimeters shorter than what I started with. As I checked out the other barber shop in the mall, Del Magic, I noticed that it was quite busy, therefore requiring a good 20 or 30 minute wait until I could get butchered. After walking past The Ultimate Cut, I noticed there wasn’t any line. I saw the woman who cut my hair the last time but decided to try my luck with this place again. I ended up getting another woman to cut my hair and she actually cut it short, just like I asked.

This brings me to another short rant about getting my hair cut. During all of junior high, high school, and the first couple years of university, I got my hair cut by the same woman. So I never had to tell her how to cut my hair. I would just sit down, she would cut it, and that’s that. I’m never good at telling somebody how to cut my hair. “Umm..shorter would be nice. But not too short! Just a nice trim, I guess.” I usually speak these same words once every month when I go to a new hairstylist/barber.

A few days before leaving Wolfville in April, I went to Al’s Barber Shop in the strip mall near Tim Horton’s. I had a friend who recommended this place and I saw ads about it being in Wolfville for the past 50 years, so it had to be good. It was definetely not your normal barber shop. The entire shop was about the size of a single bedroom in residence and it only had one chair. I sat down, told the guy that I wanted my head shaved close, and only 10 minutes later it was done…all for $7. I can’t wait to head back to Wolfville next year, I already have my new barber shop picked out.
