What’s a 5 Alarm Fire?

Posted by tvor @ 8:48 pm

The fire alarm in our building went off about an hour ago. It has a really high pitched squealing sound that can get on your nerves really easy. At first we thought it was just a fire drill but after a few minutes, it was still blaring. Looking across the street to the local fire department, the door was being raised and the fire truck’s lights were flashing. They certainly didn’t seem to be in a hurry as they turned onto the street and headed down the road, towards our apartment. Just in case there was a fire, I grabbed some McDonald’s coupons and the three of us headed across the street for some McFlurries amidst the alarm and other fire trucks that were heading towards our “possibly-on-fire” building.

It’s kind of funny and scary at the same time that Sean, Gump, and myself were the only people that seemed to head downstairs and leave the building. There are about 900 people in here, so that’s alot of people who decided to stay in their rooms and face the annoying alarm and possible fire. It turns out that the building is still standing. Somebody must have just burned their supper.

It reminds me of living in Eaton House during first year at Acadia. There were numerous times where the fire alarm would go off in the middle of the morning, during the winter, and you’d be huddled outside in your pajamas with everybody else, waiting for Security to turn the alarm off. They always seemed to take their time, never noticing that there were a hundred students almost freezing to death. Almost all of those alarms were due to popcorn being burnt on my floor. Why would anyone want popcorn at 3:00am?

  2. Having been on the phone with Sean when the alarm went off AND then hearing the firetrucks start was enough to make my heart skip a bit. But I’m glad the McFlurries were good..

  3. Yeah, Rez is really bad for “fires”. Of course, you put 200 students between the ages of 18-22 in a building, you’re going to get someone who doesn’t know how to make popcorn. Or is too drunk to know. Or just plain forgets it in the mircowave. Kind of like the time Bazz and I microwaved a container of margarine for 10 minutes. One of those “ha ha, look, its in there and melting!” kind of things. And then, then you forget its there. I feel bad for the person who cleaned the kitchen up from that molten mess…

  4. Yeah, I was glad to get out of res and false fire alarms into our nice apartment on highland……with the supersensitive fire alarm that went off if you made toast or it got too dusty or the blinds were open and the temperature raised 2 degrees. geez, it was like missions impossible. so we took the battery out. real safe. but as long as kelly didn’t make cookies, we weren’t in any danger of fire ;)

btw: 2nd in the comment wars! I gotta get my butt in gear! watch out andrew!!

  11. possums? I’m sure…

I didn’t even notice there was a comment wars listing until just now. since when has it been there?

  12. But since we are keeping score now, and I’m still in the single digits… hehe :)

Nobody answered your question. A 5 alarm fire is when 5 fire stations are called to come to fight the fire.

  13. Now, I thought that it would be 5 fire trucks. If that were the case, we had a 4 alarm fire. But it was a pretty half assed 4 alarm fire. It was over with no evidence of ANYTHING after the trip to McD’s.

  14. And Trevor — why would you want popcorn at 3am? Because, as a student, you’re awake, and you can. Its as simple as that :P

  17. I know that I am late with this comment but I do have to post it. Why in the world would anyone want to make popcorn on your floor - Trevor? Didn’t you have a kitchen counter? Didn’t THEY have a kitchen instead of coming and making it on
your floor.Even sounds gross - all these strange people at 3:00AM taking over your floor to make popcorn. I can well imagine what state they were in. Of course this is all semantics.
