Configuring KDE

Posted by tvor @ 7:55 pm

I haven’t touched Gentoo since I emerged KDE and X11 about 3 weeks ago, so I’ve decided to take another stab at it. I ran xf86config and applied the appropriate configurations, but now I’m stuck. I’ve tried running X but it hangs while running and startkde complains of not being able to connect to the X server. So, I’m calling upon my other Gentoo users out there in the audience. How do I fix this problem and start kde? And Peter, don’t tell me the answer is to try emerge gnome. ;)

  2. But you did just nullify your 44th comment since my script only knows you as ‘Andrew’ and not ‘Andrew Hankinson’. So there. Ha!

  4. But seriously, we’re gonna need a more detailed error message before we can do any debugging.

I suspect xf86config is the culprit, though. I haven’t had too many good experiences with it. I suggest you find a couple good sites on how to manually tweak an XF86Config file, and hack it yourself until it works again.

  5. If memory serves me, there’s two XF86Config programs… there’s the console text-based type, and then there’s one that actually starts a generic X-server session. The tricky part is remembering which one is which. Try looking for XF86cfg or configXF86 or something like that. The two are similarly named, but I’ve always had better luck with the Xserver based config….

    44th post!!!

  6. Yeah. It’s the X config files. Check out the gentoo users desktop guide for a bit of info and linkage.

There’s also a super fun auto configurer you can run, where you get to push buttons in answers to questions like what kind of keyboard do you have, and what resolution to run at, etc.

Do you have a USB mouse? Cause X wont start if it can’t find your mouse.

  11. No, X does support USB. But you have to do extra to get it to recog the mouse, where as it will recog a serial mouse automatically. Sorry for that possibly misleading comment.
