Flying Around
If I hadn’t gone into computer science I probably would have ended up attending the Moncton Flight College. It turns out that it was a good decision, with the declining airline market at the moment.
Getting to the topic of this post, on Wednesday I bought Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004. After having trouble flying by just using the keyboard, I went back to Future Shop on Thursday after work and purchased the Saitek Cyborg Evo 3D Joystick which is much easier to use.
To say the least, this game is amazingly realistic. It includes pretty much every airport or airstrip in the world (approximately 24,000). So far, I’ve flown a Lear Jet from Moncton to Halifax in real time (about 25 minutes), from Manchester to Heathrow, Palm Beach, and into Chicago’s O’Hare. This should keep me entertained well into the future.
Update: As requested, here are some screenshots of Flight Simulator 2004. More to come while I continue to fly around.
Ooh! Fun!
You should post some screencaps of flying into Halifax… I’d like to see if it looks real.
Or Toronto… Or San Francisco!
On second thought, why don’t you just ship the game to me.
Comment by Andrew — April 17, 2004 @ 4:10 pmflight sim 2004 is pretty cool..though i can’t believe you tried to play it with the keyboard…there must have been many a crash at that point…
Comment by justin — April 18, 2004 @ 10:51 amYep, many crashes were had during the use of the keyboard. I would take off and the plane would usually flip upside down and I’d lose control. But not anymore.

Yeah, I’m glad that Montreal and Calgary won last night. Now Toronto just has to win tonight.
Comment by Trevor — April 20, 2004 @ 1:58 pmok, I admit, Toronto was always my favorite, I gotta cheer Montreal just on principle, but if it comes down to it, the Leafs gotta take it.
Comment by erin — April 20, 2004 @ 3:07 pmthere is a girl in my lab today with a senators shirt on, she hates toronto…she and another girl have been trading back zingers all day, it’s pretty funny
Ahh Canada! Where else would you find two bright young geneticists at the country’s top school trading zingers about the upcoming hockey games.
“Crap! My bionucleic whatsamajig just stabilized and now I’ve lost a month’s worth of results! Get the PCR going! Fire up the Autoclave!”
“Yeah, well, Belfour sucks!”
