Registration Woes and Paintball

Posted by tvor @ 10:25 pm

This morning at around 5:30am I woke up and was conscious enough to remember that registration for courses started at 4:30am EST this morning. “Great,” I though, “I can beat the rush and get my courses registered right now.” After stumbling to the computer and going to the registrar’s site, it became apparent by the slow process of adding courses that other 4th year students were already registering. After 30 minutes trying to register and it going nowhere, I went back to sleep. Later that morning at work, the server for registering courses was pathetically slow and even when I submitted a form to register for a course, it would return with a 404 Not Found error or Service Temporarily Unavailable. Eventually, I just emailed the secretary of the computer science department and she was able to register me in all of the courses that I wanted.

In other news, I just got back from paintball at Area 51 Paintball Park with about 18 other IBMers. This was my first time playing indoors and I soon found that I preferred outdoor paintball much more. It was alot of fun but the lighting wasn’t all that great and everything in the paintball area was completely covered in paint, including the ground. During the 2 1/2 hours of playing I was only hit a couple times with no major welting. Now I’m looking forward to going back to Storm Warning in Kentville for September.

Acadia Schedule for 2004-2005

Posted by tvor @ 9:06 pm

After much deliberation, pondering, and deep thinking, I now present my class schedule for the 2004-2005 school year at Acadia University. It consists of a Fall and Winter schedule. The only course not shown is Comp4983 which is a full year project that doesn’t have any class time.

Even though the schedules are very “holey” and consist of 8:30am classes every day, these are courses which I am interested in taking. The micro and macro economics courses are available at other time slots but I’ve heard nothing but great reviews about Dr. Tugwell so I decided to take it with him…at 8:30am. In the past 3 years at Acadia the one thing I’ve learned is that the professor teaching the course matters more than you think. Do I dare mention Numerical Methods?

All You Can Eat Ribs Competition

Posted by tvor @ 10:27 pm

After work this evening a group of IBMers headed to Montana’s Steakhouse for all-you-can-eat ribs. It was bound to be a tough competition with alot of trash talking and taunting going on.

In the end I had eaten a total of 2.6 racks of ribs and the winners tied at 3 racks each. Now I’m in a little bit of pain as if feels like I’ve gained a few pounds.

Carlos to the Rescue

Posted by tvor @ 9:33 am

Last night, my sister and I headed down to see a Jays game since she wanted to see them play while visiting Toronto. After having no luck finding SkyDeck seats from the scalpers, we bought them from the box office. We had some pretty good seats, 5 rows in the SkyDeck behind home plate. It was raining earlier in the day so I thought that the dome would have been closed, but it was open.

Anyways, the game went well. At the end of the 7th inning, it was getting a bit chilly with the wind coming in off the lake and I was without a jacket. So, we decided to leave and get some pizza over on Yonge St since it would have cost an arm and a leg to eat at the SkyDome with the over-priced food. ($3.25 for a bottle of water, $4.00 for a slice of pizza, $4.00 for a drumstick ice cream, etc.) The Jays were up 6-5 so I assumed they were going to win. However, outside of the SkyDome they were broadcasting the game from the radio and the announcer mentioned that Seattle had scored 3 more runs. So now it was 8-6 for the Mariners. “Well, atleast we didn’t stay to see the Blue Jays lose,” I thought. We had some pizza and then headed back home. After arriving at home we were greeted by Sean who brought some good/bad news. Good news: The Jays had won. Bad news: Cindy and I had missed Carlos Delgados’ 3-run home run in the bottom of the 9th with 2 out. It didn’t really surprise me that this had happened. It seems that whenever I go to a sporting event and decide to leave early (which is very rare), something miraculous usually happens after I leave. Back when I was about 13 I went to a minor league baseball game in Moncton. The home team was down by about 5 runs going into the 7th inning so we decided to leave. The next day I learned that they had rallied with a couple home runs in the last innning to win the game. I must have been bringing them bad luck.

Movies, Graffiti, and Fresca

Posted by tvor @ 7:43 pm

It’s a nice long weekend here in Toronto with some great weather.

On Thursday night, Gump, Mike, and myself went to Mandarin Buffet which was giving every Canadian a free buffet on Canada Day. However, the lineup was outside of the door and across the lawn, probably a 2 hour wait to eat. So, we decided to head to Montana’s Steakhouse instead. The ribs and dessert were great…and $40 later, I was full. Then we headed out to the Cineplex Odeon to see Spiderman 2 but it was sold-out so we saw Shrek 2 which was hilarious.

Last night, Mike and I headed down to Rainbow Cinemas to see Farenheit 9/11 but there were still tickets available for Spiderman 2, so we decided to see that instead. It was a great movie, I’d give it a 9.5/10. Now I just need to see the first Spiderman movie so that I can put the entire storyline together.

Today I took a short jaunt downtown since there wasn’t much else going on. Not much to report on here although there was some kind of rap/hip-hop/graffiti artist show going on called Style in Progress which I checked out for a while. There were a bunch of graffiti artists showing off their art which was pretty amazing considering they were only using cans of spraypaint.

While on the way home, I stopped by a new Chinese supermarket that opened just up the street. It’s like an Atlantic Superstore but all in Chinese. That place was packed too so I quickly grabbed a case of Fresca and headed home.
