Tony Campolo and Missions

Posted by tvor @ 4:34 pm

After doing some random surfing, I came upon this quote from Tony Campolo. For those of you that don’t know of Tony, he’s a well-known Christian speaker who does talks all over the world. Actually, I saw him once in Moncton at a youth rally about 8 years ago.

Anyways, here is the quote which Tony has been known to say at churches and youth groups. Quite true, isn’t it? Especially when you put it into the context of where he says it.

“I have three things I’d like to say today. First, while you were sleeping last night, 30,000 kids died of starvation or diseases related to malnutrition. Second, most of you don’t give a shit. What’s worse is that you’re more upset with the fact that I said ’shit’ than the fact that 30,000 kids died last night.” - Tony Campolo

Another reason why I’ve put this quote here is that I will be considering another option to my possibilities of either graduate school or going out into the work force after graduation: missions. The past couple of large group meetings at ACF have dealt with missionaries from the Philippines and Kazakhstan who have told of their experiences. These speakers have been very interesting and I’ve started thinking about going on either a long or short term mission trip after leaving Acadia. I’m not sure where I would go. There are possibilities for India, China, Africa, and pretty much any other place in the world. Once again, I’ll keep you posted as to any new developments.

  1. Wow! That is not a response to Tony Campolo though it very well could be. Tony does get us thinking. Actually tony was in Moncton on Monday - say that was yesterday. He spoke to over 200 women and then the humble EMF hosted him to speak to Pastors and church leaders.Tony spoke eloquently about Einstein’s theory of relativity and how that helped in the whole understanding of time and the essence of time and space. Jesus who died for us 2,000 years ago to gain our salvation is present in time with us today, and we will be with Him in time in eternity.
But getting back to WOW! That fellow Trevor who at one time, was so predictable, has us with eyes wide open wondering just where is he going to be next June? It would seem that anywhere in the world is a possibility. We will tune in and find out how Trevor’s will and the Divine Will connect. Exciting, adventuresome, suspenceful whatever route you take.
In restless anticipation we watch and wait.

  2. That would be very cool. I thought about doing that once but as most of the things that I think about doing something happens and they just don’t pan out but it would be very cool. GO FOR IT!

  4. Hey Trev,

That sounds like a really honourable and exciting route to take. Give it a lot of thought and I know you will make the right decision. Way to go!
