Canoe Trip

Posted by tvor @ 4:56 pm

Yesterday evening, seven brave paddlers ventured out onto Black River Lake to spend the night on a small, private island.

The adventure started around 5:30pm when we loaded into the old Suburban and hauled the canoes and our belongings to the lake. It was a foggy evening on the lake which lead to reduced visibility, but nothing to make us turn back. After a couple of hours, we came upon several islands which may have been our destination. After continuing for another hour of searching, we came upon the small island which also has a small cabin. Total canoe time was approximately 3 hours as we arrived around 9:00pm with a bit of day-light to spare.

After getting our belongings off of the canoe, a fire was made in the cabin’s fireplace and we all sat around and relaxed, with the only light coming from the fire and a small lantern. During the night, five of us, including myself, slept in the cabin while two of the others slept in a tent.

When I awoke in the morning, it was bright outside which lead me to believe that it must have been around 8:00, possibly even later. After a glance at the clock, it was 6:18am. I decided to get out of bed anyways and explore the small island. It was a foggy morning which allowed for a peaceful effect of a smoke-like mist hovering over the water. After 30 minutes of being outside, I made my way back to bed to sleep for a couple more hours.

I woke up again around 8:30 and helped Mike to start a fire while Dan started to prepare the breakfast, consisting of pancakes and bacon. After everyone had breakfast, we went out on the lake again for an hour of canoeing and exploring some other islands. Upon returning, we had some lunch, packed up, and headed back to land. The venture back to our starting point only took a bit over 2 hours as we arrived at 4:00pm. All in all, it was a great trip!
