Well there are a few small updates to announce since my last entry from earlier in the week. First off, I had an interview with a small software development company in downtown Vancouver on Wednesday morning which ended up lasting 2.5 hours. The interview included all of the regular questions such as “Give me an example when you showed leadership”, etc and an hour of technical questions and an OO design session. Overall I felt that it went very good but I’ll have to wait until next week before hearing back from them. I also received an invitation to write a technical test for another company in Vancouver on this upcoming Tuesday which I will have to start preparing myself for soon.
In other news, Sean, Julie, and myself went to the Vancouver Art Museum tonite where they had a Picasso Exhibit along with some art by Emily Carr. It was my first visit to an art gallery and it was quite interesting, although I didn’t quite “get” most of the art that I saw. Picasso had some very nice paintings along with some very detailed sketchings. It was interesting to see the actual brush strokes he took in his paintings and it felt like being part of history standing only a few feet away.
After leaving the Art Gallery, we stopped into Chapters and then came back home with a quick stop into A&W for a snack. Our time at A&W was rather amusing since there were a couple ladies arguing with the supervisor about being able to use the washroom. I’ll spare the details of that altercation, but you can read about it on Julie’s blog.
We just got back from a 12km+ walk on the Sea Wall which goes around Stanley Park near downtown Vancouver. It was quite a picturesque walk with great views of the mountains and ocean. The temperature was nice and cool which made it even nicer. Afterwards, we stopped into Hamburger Mary’s for hamburgers and milkshakes. It was my first ever ostrich burger experience and it was very satisfying.
On Saturday we ventured downtown to Gastown where we scouted out the building where I will hopefully have an interview sometime later this week. Then we dined at The Old Spaghetti Factory before heading back to the apartment.
As per usual, pictures from the Sea Wall and Gastown are in the BC Gallery.
After 8 hours of flying with an hour layover in Toronto, I arrived in Vancouver yesterday around noon. Sean met me at the airport and we took the bus back to his and Julie’s apartment.
Overall, the trip went off without a hitch although I was exhausted yesterday around 4:00pm due to the 4-hour time change and travelling about 4,500km across the country. However, if I wanted to make any attempt to get used to the Pacific timezone I would have to stay up for atleast the next 4 or 5 hours. This was accomplished by playing Halo 2 on the XBox (which is our roomie tradition!), watching some old school Full House and CSI, and finishing the night off with supper at Memphis Blues BBQ which consisted of ALOT of meat.
It’s now just past noon and I will be continuing with the job hunt today. The plans for tonite are homemade pizza and playing some board games with Sean, Julie, and some of their friends.
Here is a picture of the Rockies during the flight yesterday. More pictures can be found in the British Columbia gallery.
It’s 5:30am here on the east coast and I’m just having some breakfast before heading off to the airport for my 7:05am flight to Toronto. After an hour layover in the T-dot I will be on my way to Vancouver. It’s hard to believe that in another 10 hours I will be on the other side of this huge country!
One plane ticket to Vancouver.
One week until I depart.
One excited guy!
As promised, here are a few of the LightScribe labels which I have created during the past few days.
After creating my first DVD label, it was very evident that the image wasn’t as crisp or dark as the Johnny Cash label which I created on a CD. At first I thought it may have been a problem with the Memorex DVDs but I found someone with the same problem using Verbatim media. It seems that since a DVD is made up of 2 discs, the resulting label appears to be holographic on the DVD and is less detailed.

Tonite during a visit to Future Shop, I decided to purchase an HP 640CI Double Layer Internal DVD-RW Drive With LightScribe which was on sale for $129.99. During the past few months I have become a huge fan of Bit Torrent which means that my hard disk is quickly running out of space.
Since the drive has the ability of LightScribe, I also purchased a Memorex 10-Pack 8X DVD+R With Lightscribe which I got $10 off due to a pricing mistake.
The drive came with a sample CD-R with LightScribe which I decided to use for composing a Johnny Cash CD. Here is the finished product:
